The Department of Culture and Tourism - Abu Dhabi Celebrates the 'Year of the 50th' With Special Cultural Offerings

In celebration of the UAE’s Golden Jubilee, the Department of Culture and Tourism – Abu Dhabi (DCT Abu Dhabi) is offering a diverse calendar of cultural events, complemented by the launch of the all-new Jubilee Cultural Pass, providing visitors looking for immersive, rewarding cultural experiences the opportunity to explore, enjoy and dine at cultural landmarks across the emirate at special rates.

The Jubilee Cultural Pass will be available until 31 December 2021, granting holders free-of-charge and discounted entry to key Abu Dhabi cultural treasures as well as special deals on tickets, workshops, F&B and more. The initiative aims to introduce even wider audiences to Abu Dhabi’s culture offerings, as part of DCT Abu Dhabi’s commitment to promoting the emirate’s museums, cultural centres, and historic sites and landscapes.

Bolstering the appeal of the Jubilee Cultural Pass is Abu Dhabi’s calendar of events, including festivals, concerts, and exhibitions, taking place at cultural sites across the emirate in the coming months. With the ‘Year of the 50th’ as a general theme, visitors and residents can enjoy programming which raises awareness of the UAE’s many achievements over the past five decades, showcases the country’s proud cultural heritage, as well as imagines what the next 50 years hold for the nation.

The calendar features the return of annual heritage events such as the Al Ain’s Traditional Handicrafts Festival as well as the Al Hosn Festival, a celebration of both Emirati heritage and the UAE’s contemporary artistic expressions. During Al Hosn Festival, Qasr Al Hosn will be hosting a series of activations including the A Day in the Palace exhibition, a classic car parade, and Scents of Qasr Al Hosn, a series of workshops featuring candle making, perfume customising, incense crafting and more.

Other highlights in the coming months include live performances returning to Cultural Foundation, the emirate’s cultural centre. Another season of the Abu Dhabi Classics performance series will feature multicultural concerts and events by ensembles such as leading chamber orchestra Wiener Concert-Verein, the Accademia Teatro Alla Scala, and more, while concerts from Sounds of the UAE 2021 will celebrate 50 years of the nation through music.

Cultural Foundation is hosting three diverse exhibitions, including Al Mujamma, which tells the story of Cultural Foundation through interactive archival displays and features new commissioned installations by three Emirati artists. The Experience Mars children’s exhibition is an immersive experience celebrating the UAE’s achievements in space, while Mohamed Chabâa: Visual Consciousness presents the life’s work of Mohamed Chabâa (1935–2013), a pioneer of Moroccan contemporary art and Global South modernity.

Abu Dhabi’s visitors can also enjoy the inaugural Louvre Abu Dhabi Art Here 2021 exhibition, as well as the Building with Earth exhibition at Al Ain’s historic Al Jahili Fort, exploring this fascinating and ancient construction technique which has deep roots in the UAE and in countries around the world.

Special Golden Jubilee initiatives across DCT Abu Dhabi’s various sectors include the Tkhayyal (Imagine) Abu Dhabi Competition, which invites the community to share a creative piece of work that depicts their vision of future Abu Dhabi in the next 50 years. Meanwhile, the literary arena has seen the launch of the ‘Bridges to Publishing’ project, which will see 50 publishing grants allocated to Emirati publishers, as well as the Dhakha’er Emaratiyyah initiative, which is curating a list of the greatest Emirati literary works produced in the past 50 years.
